Tim Brennan’s motivation for organizing a licorice tasting was only a little self-serving. He wanted “an alternative to a regular night out,” says the 23-year-old researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. And, he adds, “I love licorice — the saltier the better.”

Welcome to Robin’s Candy Shop, a modern-day version of an old-fashioned penny candy store that doubles as a trip down memory lane. “We’re not a children’s candy store,” says owner Robin Helfand. Her goodies appeal more to “the kid in a grown-up.” The nine-month-old Newbury Street shop is the entrepreneur’s second; the first opened in 2008 in Great Barrington.
